Antitumor effect and growth environment of Spirulina platensis

The extraction of β - carotene from Spirulina platensis was used in the study of oral carcinogenesis in hamsters by Harvard Dental College. They divided 40 hamsters into two groups, one group fed with Spirulina beta carotene extract, and the other group did not. Results there was no cancer in the former group, and all the patients in the latter group had oral cancer. Before feeding hamsters, these substances were found to be capable of killing oral cancer rapidly.

The anti-cancer effect was affirmed

As we all know, spirulina contains high content of phycobiliportens (PBP). It is generally believed that Spirulina contains two phycobiliproteins: phycocyanin and allophycocyanin. Phycocyanin has a light trapping effect and is being developed as a photosensitizer for laser assisted cancer treatment. In 1988, foreign scholars used 0.25 mg / ml phycocyanin to treat and culture mouse bone marrow cancer cells. After laser irradiation, the survival rate of cancer cells was only 15%. The survival rate of cancer cells irradiated by laser alone was 69%.



In 1995, Chinese scholar Cai Xinhan et al. Used different concentrations of phycocyanin solution to treat cancer, and found that the survival rate of cancer cells increased with the decrease of phycocyanin concentration, showing a good concentration dose effect. The higher the concentration, the lower the survival rate of cancer cells.


In recent years, Harvard Medical School, which has been in the forefront of cancer cells, has verified the good inhibitory effect of Spirulina on cancer. The National Cancer Institute of the United States reported that phycocyanin and phycobilisin in Spirulina can not only attack cancer lesions, but also prevent and inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Immune deficiency causes cancer:

Cellular immunity plays an important role in anti-tumor immune response. Why do some people get cancer, some people can't?

This is related to immunosuppression and immunodeficiency in these people. Generally speaking, people with immune deficiency may get cancer, and those without immune deficiency may not. Spirulina can enhance the cellular immune function of human and avoid immune deficiency. This is because β - carotene in Spirulina stimulates lymphocyte proliferation and protects T-cells, B-cells and phagocytes from damage; Spirulina Polysaccharide can increase the thickness of thymic cortex, promote the transformation of monocyte macrophages and lymphocytes, and enhance the self-protection ability of the body; phycobiliprotein can stimulate the immune activity of lymphocytes and promote the disease resistance of the immune system. At present, the immune and anti-cancer functions of Spirulina have been applied in clinical practice in Japan, the United States and other countries.
